Event Horizon

Event Horizon

Here light changes its path

Artistic scheme, not a trajectory calculation

A painted study of a matte dark core crossed by a thin tilted disk of warm light, the far side of the disk bent into a faint ring above it
A still study of the same event, painted for this essay. It is an illustration, not an observation or a photograph.

Flat section, schematic, not a simulation

We don't see the hole. We see the light next to it.

  • Curvature the path of light bends near the mass
  • Shadow the region from which no light returns
  • Observer where the bent light finally arrives

A black hole does not release light from beyond its horizon. Whatever crosses that boundary no longer reaches us, so the centre of the picture is not an object lit from within. It is an absence.

The glow comes from the matter around it: gas drawn into orbit, heated, shining before it falls. That light bends on its way to us, which is why the dark shape seems framed by a thin bright ring.

Sometimes the most important thing in an image is what is not in it.

Return to the observation

How it works

  1. Step one

    What the visitor does first.

  2. Step two

    What happens next.

  3. Step three

    How it all ends.
